The Moller Skycar, One of the World’s Most Iconic ‘flying Cars,’ Is Now Available for Purchase.

Flying automobiles are an old human desire that is no longer simply a dream. Over the last 10 years, hobbyists have built tens of operational flying automobiles. Furthermore, there are tiny businesses that design and build flying automobiles to request.

As a result, everyone may feel like James Bond right now. It is worth noting that the cost of genuine flying vehicles ranges from $ 300,000 to $ 3.5 million, depending on their capabilities.

“Anyone can fly the Skycar,” blared the headline on the January 1991 cover of Popular Mechanics, hinting at a future in which everyone may possess their own “flying car.” That fantasy never came true, but the original Skycar is now available for purchase.

Moller International, the firm that created the renowned vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, revealed today that the M400 Skycar will be available for purchase on eBay. Just don’t expect to use it daily.

That’s because, despite passing multiple low-stakes tests, the Skycar has not been cleared for flight by the Federal Aviation Administration. According to Moller, one of the terms of selling is that “it cannot be flown.”

“The Skycar combines the high-speed capabilities of a fixed-wing aircraft with the vertical take-off and landing capabilities of a helicopter,” says Moller.

Its ducted fans offer lift and propulsion while avoiding the hazards of exposed rotor blades and the high maintenance costs associated with rotary-winged aircraft. The vehicle utilizes cutting-edge fly-by-wire computer technology to monitor, manage, and maintain the aircraft’s stability while remaining simple to operate.”

So, why would someone buy this contraption if they couldn’t use it to scare their neighbors? Moller recommends the Skycar to anybody searching for a “centerpiece of any car or aircraft collection in a public or private museum.” To be honest, this object is a piece of history – and not a particularly happy one.

Paul Moller, 80, a retired professor at the University of California, Davis, is widely regarded as the world’s foremost flying vehicle enthusiast.

Moller has been preaching the gospel of VTOL for over 40 years, stating that in the future, we will all have personal, road-ready aircraft parked in our garages. And he used pure force of will to bring this Jetson-ian vision of the future to fruition. However, none of these vehicles were able to fly for an extended period, and many today see Moller as a fraud.

In 2003, the Securities and Exchange Commission charged him with issuing false stock. In 2013, he started a crowdfunding effort to get his flying automobile off the ground, but he only raised 3% of his stated target. He allegedly spent $100 million designing his inventions before declaring personal bankruptcy in 2009.

However, Moller may be justified in the end, because many others have taken his concept of a street-worthy personal aircraft and carried it to the next level. Flying vehicles are now popular, with everyone from Uber to Google’s Larry Page investing in the concept.

Many experts believe that, because of advancements in battery technology, artificial intelligence, and drones, we are closer than ever to seeing actual VTOL aircraft take flight.
