Team Sonic Racing: Overdrive is a New 2-Part Animation by Sega, New Sonic Game Confirmed Under Development

Sega has had a successful panel showcase at SXSW this year. They released a new trailer for Team Sonic Racing showcasing their new customization elements that will be present in the game at launch. Alongside the new trailer, comes the 2-Part animation dubbed Team Sonic Racing: Overdrive.

The animation is made by Sega in collab with Tyson Hesse and Neko Productions. The 1st part of the animation is now live on Youtube while no details have been announced as to when the 2nd part will appear. Perhaps the 2nd part will be released alongside the launch of the game on May 21st to promote the launch even more. The animation has no dialogue and Sega has described the short as:

Team Sonic, Team Rose, and Team Dark face off at Wisp Circuit in this first of two parts of a special animation based on Team Sonic Racing! As usual, the diabolical Dr. Eggman seems to have his own plans – can the teams overcome his tricks, or will they find themselves more than a little distracted?

Youtube Video Description

The short was made by the same team behind Sonic Mania Adventures. The show ran for only 6 episodes but was personally much more enjoyable than Sonic Boom. The new short, Team Sonic Racing: Overdrive, looks neat but the lack of dialogue leaves a little to be desired. Sega has commented that adding dialogue to the short would have required a significantly larger budget which was not viable as for now.

Perhaps we can see Sonic Mania Adventures return for a full series this time with also binding elements with Team Sonic Racing: Overdrive. Unlike the hideous live action film with its questionable design choices, the animated series developed by Neko Productions looks much better. A new animated sonic movie or series would be much better than any live action film.

A new Sonic game has been confirmed to be under development by the head of the sonic team, Takashi Iizuka. The announcement was made during their panel at SXSW this year. We only got a confirmation for a new sonic game, not any other information on it. The last Sonic release was Sonic Mania Plus which was back in 2018. The last modern sonic game was Sonic Forces that launched way back in late 2017. We most likely should not expect a new Sonic Game by the end of this year, except for Team Sonic Racing of course. We could get a new Sonic Game revealed at E3 if we are lucky.
