PlayStation 4 Got Beaten By Xbox One in Sales By Over 114k Units For The Month of August

Sony’s PlayStation 4 launched back in 2013. Since then, the PlayStation 4 sold 40 million units (as of May 2016). On the other hand, Microsoft didn’t even reveal any recent numbers that show how many times the Xbox One got sold. Anyways, we all know that the PlayStation 4 beat the Xbox One by a large margin in sales; but that is only until the month of August this year.

Microsoft announced the Xbox One S and the Xbox ‘Scorpio’ at E3 2016 and soon after that, in August, Microsoft released the Xbox One S. The release of the Xbox One S made a huge impact on the sales of Microsoft’s console. Xbox sales increased by 75% after the launch of the Xbox One S. So, after all this, Microsoft finally crossed Sony in sales; by a big number.

According to market research company, The NPD Group, Inc., 274,800 Xbox One consoles were sold in the US in the month of August 2016. In comparison, the PlayStation 4 only sold 160,000 consoles in the month of August 2016. Compared to August 2015, the unit sales of the Xbox One console increased by 37.2% in August 2016. On the other hand, the unit sales of PlayStation 4 decreased by 22.9% in August 2016 as compared to August 2015. So yeah, August 2016 was a win for Microsoft. The Xbox One console sold 114,800 units more than the PlayStation 4.

August 2016 was indeed a win for Microsoft, but the whole story is different now. At the “PlayStation Meeting“, Sony announced their two new consoles too, called PlayStation 4 Slim and PlayStation 4 Pro. The PlayStation 4 Pro will arrive later but the PlayStation 4 Slim is making its way into the market now. The months of September and October are going to be very interesting. We’ll see who takes the crown for the coming months. Till then, stay tuned to GeeksULTD.

  1. With the Xbox One S expanding its offerings and Gears of War 4 hitting, I expect the Xbox One will win September and October. The PS4 may get a push by the fanboys when the PS4 Pro releases, though December will be interesting.

If the Xbox One wins in the US after the PS4 Pro releases then Sony is in trouble because 2017 will likely belong to the Xbox and the Scorpio will probably allow for a commanding lead.

    • Meanwhile in reality, Pro and Slim are slapping the Shitbox down where it belongs. Meanwhile in reality, only 120,000 of the meagre 270,000 Xbones sold last month was S models. What a flop. I’d feel bad for you but you’re an Xbox Mad drone so you need the reality check.
