“4.2TFLOPS Is Not Enough to do Real 4K”, Says Xbox’s Albert Penello

That’s the point of those numbers.The PlayStation 4 Pro recently got announced and since then, there are many hot debates going on in the gaming communities about the 4K capabilities of the PS4 Pro. The console is said to have 4.2TFLOPS of power, which is definitely not enough for running games at 4K Ultra-HD resolution. Even the CPU inside the PS4 Pro is outdated. The PS4 Pro is still using the old 8-core AMD Jaguar processor that was found in the original PS4. It is clocked at 2.1GHz, a bit higher than the original PS4 but still not enough to handle games at native 4K resolution.

On the other hand, Microsoft’s Xbox Scorpio is touted to have 6TFLOPS of power. Which makes more sense in terms of 4K gaming. In an interview with Eurogamer, Xbox Executive Albert Penello talked about the PS4 Pro and the Xbox Scorpio.

“(Developers are) going to be able to decide to take that six teraflops of power and do what they think is best for their game. But I know that 4.2 teraflops is not enough to do true 4K. So, I feel like our product aspired a little bit higher, and we will have fewer asterisks around the 4K experiences we deliver on our box.”

Judging from Penello’s statements, it seems like the Xbox Scorpio is going to have a big advantage over the PS4 Pro. It looks like Xbox is going to offer full control over the power of the Xbox Scorpio to the developers. They can do anything they want, whether that’d be running their game at 4K or at 1080p 60+FPS.

Penello was later asked why did they choose such specifications for the Xbox Scorpio. He replied:

The point of those numbers [TFLOPS, Memory bandwidth, etc] was to deliver Xbox One-quality games in 4K. That’s the point of those numbers.
